4 Provocative Thoughts About Our Critical Thinking Skills

Kathleen Mills of PracticeMentors.us

As a nation our critical thinking skills are shot! I will speak for Life Tree Counseling only when I say that we are seeing way too many clients who are in panic mode and a heightened state of anxiety right now because they consistently believe what they're told and question nothing! They have seemingly forgotten how to do their own research re: current events and it really saddens me to see it.

I wanted to update my audio intro on my Life Tree Counseling counselor page to reflect my thoughts about this and what we can do about it, and so I put this together with a little help from Phillip. We recorded it and found it a bit too long for my audio intro so I decided to leave the intro as it is and include this new audio on the page as well. Thought it might make an interesting blog post, too, so I'm sharing it with you here and now. So here we go. And the text of it is below, fyi. Hope you like it!

We've Lost Our Critical Thinking Skills…

As a society we’ve lost our ability to form our own thoughts and plans. We don't teach critical thinking anymore. We’ve had our natural curiosity beaten out of us, and been told what to do by parents, teachers, professors, and employers until we have become willing sheep. It's not your fault but now that you’re aware, it IS your fault if you let it continue.

…Which Leads to Irrational Fear

When we allow others to determine our thoughts we allow our worldview to be shaped by others with an agenda and they don’t always want what you want or what’s best for you. That leaves a lot of unanswered and confusing questions and the unavoidable outcome of that is an irrational, controlling fear. It quashes enthusiasm, free will, and personal freedom. Apathy sets in while your mind deteriorates and hope fades. The only way to avoid cognitive-dissonance and survive is to yield to the fear and believe it is true.

But that’s no answer to the problem. The first step to regaining something you've lost is to admit you've lost it. We've lost our critical thinking skills!

Hone Your Ability to Think Critically for Yourself

We must re-learn how to be curious and grant ourselves permission to think for ourselves again. Don’t believe everything you see on TV or read in a paper; question everything, do your own research, then trust your own mind. It puts you back in control of your own thoughts and the decisions that are made for your life!

The only way back is to relearn critical thinking skills and begin to THINK. Equipping you with facts can give tremendous opportunity to live fully because fear dissipates when facts are revealed.

You have it all... you just need guidance to get back on YOUR personal path of life liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Regaining Our Personal Freedoms

God gave you a beautiful brain. He also, gave you hope, His Promise by way of problem solving through critical thinking. We’ve had that taken from us along the way. I am here to help you reconnect with both the purpose God gave you and the mind with which you were gifted. Together, we can reshape your outlook on things and re-orient your life’s purpose.

The only thing standing between you and a better understanding of the world around you and what’s going on within it is the way you think! Why don’t we get started on that right now?

Plan Smart. Be Safe. Serve Others.
