Proposed CE Rules Change BHEC Meeting Update
Today's BHEC Council Meeting is in the books and the YouTube video should be posted in a day or two. If it's posted in time I'll provide the link in Friday's newsletter.
Proposed CE Rules Change BHEC Meeting
Things went very well regarding the proposed CE rules changes. Our collective written comments submission efforts seem to have paid off as several Council members voiced their awareness of the volume and intensity of submissions. Thanks to everyone who submitted something.
Bottom-line, the Council decided to send the change proposal back down to the LPC Board for further consideration and a (hopefully major) tune-up. That is very good news.
Major Points From the Rules Change Discussion
- Both members Hallbauer and Taylor were impressed with the volume and intensity of the submissions and it obviously gave them fodder for consideration.
- Hallbauer noted that the feedback specifically expressed a primary concern that "Independent Stakeholders" are currently excluded from the list of "Approved Providers". Chris Taylor echoed the point.
- Hallbauer mentioned that BHEC got out of the CE provider regulation business a year ago because that's what The Sunset Commission wanted to see done. He voiced his concern that it felt like the Boards were creeping back into that regulatory environment, and that didn't seem to sit well with him. Taylor again verbally supported that position.
- Several Council members stated that "the math" created by this new set of ce rules might be a bit more burdensome than necessary and indicated another look at that might be warranted.
- Both Hallbauer and Taylor concluded their thoughts by strongly stating that we mustn't forget that these rules we're talking about may adversely affect the livelihoods of real people that make a living from ceu course offerings. I appreciate that that point was recognized.
- BHEC ED, Darrel Spinks, stressed to the public that the "rules change system is working". Concerns from licensees have been received, heard, and the measure has been moved back to the LPC Board level for further study.
So What's Next?
The whole measure now goes back to the LPC Board where hopefully they'll overhaul the entire transmission, get out of the ce regulation business, and simplify this beast. Not quite sure how we get our thoughts and opinions directly the the LPC Board members but I'll know that by Tuesday, and I'll be sure and let you know.
Summary
I'll have more on this next week after I've given this stuff some time to marinate properly but I can tell you a big chunk of Tuesday's post will probably have something to do with, "if The Sunset Commission wants BHEC/Boards OUT of the ce regulatory business, wouldn't that bring into focused question the 50% Rule and especially the Approved Provider List"? Those are things designed to steer and regulate the acquisition of ce's as well as who can/cannot provide them. Until next week, what do you think about that last thought? Comments below, please.

The Counseling Landscape Workshop Series
The Counseling Landscape Workshop Series Everything we teach is based around The Counseling Landscape. That’s the body of information you need to know in order to run a successful practice, a lot of which is required by BHEC. Completing this series of workshops will put you in the top 5% of all mental health counselors trying to run a practice today and it will put you on a firm, safe foundation. Oh, and each…
Thank you for your vigilance and care for our profession! The professional counselors I know are competent and “professional.” We certainly do not deserve to be treated as if we have malicious intent and can’t be trusted. We/I want a successful counseling relationship with my clients and I do seek to maintain my professional expertise both to benefit my client’s needs and my profession (business).
Yet there are those out there who think that because a very small percentage of a very large group don’t do things “correctly”, in their view, that their way of thinking/agenda needs to be forced upon the rest of us. Ruffles my feathers, as you can tell.
Thank you for your well crafted comment. It is appreciated.
And what are you doing up at 2:45 in the morning??
Thankful you are on top of BHEC issues.
Pedaling as fast as we can, Chip! 😉
Ms Mills,
I read your message and l was wondering if l have to meet the 24 CEU, to be able to renew my license. I am a USAF veteran. Ms LeGrevellec insisted that l must do this if l want to get my license again, and practice.
Hi Godfrey. Not quite sure who Ms LeGrevellec is but based on what I think you’re asking I would tell you this–> Texas LPC’s remain under the current CE rule requirements. If you take 24 CE’s via the current CE requirements you should be good. Based on what little you’ve told me about your situation….
